Honoring the Legacy of Terry Bell
It is with heavy hearts that the American Poolplayers Association (APA) family reflects on the passing of its co-founder, Terry Bell, who departed this world on June 27, 2025, at the age of 81. A visionary in the world of billiards, Bell and his late partner, Larry Hubbart, were instrumental in establishing the APA, which has flourished into the largest pool league globally, boasting over 270,000 members.
From Soldier to Pool Pioneer
Born on September 30, 1943, in Carmichael, California, Bell’s journey took a pivotal turn during his time in the Army. He discovered his passion for pool while serving in South Korea, where the game's allure captivated him. It wasn't long before he blended his military experience with an entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to play for money across the country. His love for the game and background in competitive sports allowed him to see the potential for organized leagues as he mingled with other pro players.
Creating a Community of Players
In the mid-70s, Bell co-owned a pool hall in Texarkana, which sparked an idea reminiscent of bowling leagues. Along with Hubbart, he founded the APA in 1979, supported by Anheuser-Busch, launching the Busch Pool League. Their innovative concept transformed how players experienced pooling, fostering community and connection through competitive play.
A Lasting Impact on the Billiards Community
Bell's influence on the billiards community cannot be overstated. Even after retiring as president, he remained active as Chairman of the Board, perpetuating a culture of camaraderie and excellence within APA. His induction into the Billiard Hall of Fame in 2010 is a testament to his enduring legacy.
Remembering a Beloved Figure
Beyond his entrepreneurial feats, Bell was remembered for his warmth, honesty, and dedication to family. As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his love for others was as impactful as his contributions to the sport. Terry Bell leaves behind a legacy defined by passion, community, and sportsmanship.
Let us celebrate Terry Bell’s life and contributions by actively participating in our local leagues, ensuring his vision of community continues to thrive. Our shared love for pool is a beautiful reminder of his enduring spirit.
